Master of Practical Theology Online Program
The Master of Practical Theology acts as a bridge for those who plan to apply for a Doctorate of Ministry but do not currently have a Master of Divinity (MDIV) or MDIV equivalency. The Association of Theological Schools defines MDIV equivalence as 72 credit hours in theology, ministry and/or biblical studies. This degree helps those who have at least 30 credits of relevant graduate studies obtain MDIV equivalency and enables a person to apply for a Doctorate of Ministry program.
Each Master of Practical Theology student is reviewed and provided with a personalized path for MDIV equivalency. Students often take 18 credits in foundational topics such as theology, biblical studies, church history, and cultural contexts of ministry. If students have previous credit in these subjects, they may take additional electives instead. Students also often take 18 credits in integrated courses focusing on the missional church, leadership, worship, proclamation, spiritual formation, or congregational relationships.
The entire program can be completed online. While Wesley Seminary offers one-week residential courses, they are not a requirement to complete the degree.
